Mechanical Watches
The mechanical watch is similar to a miniature engine. The inside the watch fitted with the regulating and other parts, forms the movement, or main part of the watch. The way the mechanical watch keeps time can be broken down as follows: First the barrel and mainspring transmit power to the "train" or gears of the watch. Second the "train" transmits the power to the escapement. Third the escapement takes the power and transmits it to the balance wheel by a pallet with stones and roller with an impulse stone which is attached to the balance wheel. Fourth the escapement energy is transmitted to the balance wheel and it along with the escapement create the power divisions which make up the time keeping and "beat" of the watch. Finally the time-keeping ability of the balance and escapement is transmitted to the hands which are staked to the long lower pivots of the gear train of the watch. For and automatic-wind watch an additional mechanism designed to wind the watch as wearer moves about during the day. For a chronograph another mechanism, the chronograph plate, would be incorporated and would contain the gear train and hands of the chronograph mechanism.
Quartz Watches
In a quartz watch, the heart of the movement is the integrated circuit and quartz crystal. Power comes from a small battery. Time-keeping is regulated by a quartz crystal which is made to vibrate by the power supplied through the circuit by the battery. Quartz watches are extremely accurate thanks to their high frequency of the quartz crystal oscillations (32 kHz), most quartz watches are accurate to within a few seconds or a minute of so a year.
